Beyond their lightweight nature and role in maintaining product quality, plastics play a crucial role in safeguarding our products and helping prevent food waste, due to their convenience, accessibility, and food safety. We are actively working to use the least amount of plastic packaging necessary to securely encase our products, while simultaneously ensuring that the plastic employed is recyclable after its utility phase.

As part of our sustainability efforts, we are exploring opportunities to augment the use of recycled plastics in our packaging. However, being a medical food producer presents us with the challenge of ensuring the highest standards of food-safe plastics. While our inclination is towards increasing the use of recycled plastics, the current offerings do not align with our safety benchmarks. Nevertheless, given the rapid advancements in the market, we remain committed to seeking ways to source and integrate sufficient volumes of high-quality, food-grade recycled content.

Our PKU Sphere liquid is produced at the Nestle Eau Claire facility. This facility was just awarded the U.S. department of Energy’s Better Plants Initiative award for its state-of-the-art water savings project. This facility implemented an advanced reverse osmosis system, saving over 26 million gallons of water annually. This was not the first sustainability achievement for Eau Claire as they had already implemented a zero waste-to-landfill program. This means that everything that comes into the factory is reduced, reused, recycled or recovered. Their next step is powering the entire facility with renewable energy by the end of 2025.

Vitaflo is proactively integrating packaging composition details into our product labels. By the end of 2024, we foresee our product labels featuring a QR code that, when scanned with a smartphone, will promptly display the composition of the individual packaging components.
